Why Percussion?
When a brass section in a symphony just wasn’t powerful enough to convey the composer’s intensity and emotion, percussion would be added to enhance the “weight” of the passage.
Similarly, I play percussion because I feel it grants me the reinforcement needed to articulate the feelings I cannot express on my own.
The music I tend to gravitate towards is fiery and explosive, or reflective and beautiful. These emotions are among many that I find difficult to communicate through words.
For me, that is where music, particularly percussion, serves as a “vessel” to express those feelings at their extremities.
THE MARIMBA
The marimba has always captured my ears since I first heard the instrument played. To me, it serves as the most powerful voice for my own expression through music.
There is something special to me about marimba that makes every time I hear it being played feel like the first time.
“. . . I have a great desire to find its expressive possibilities - knowing that at one time this most beautiful wood came from a living tree with its own history and experience. It is as if the marimba bar breathes like a living tree, and when I make music I want to breathe with it. ”
